An Air Force Academy plane from Nha Trang City crashed in a field in Tuy Hoa City, Phu Yen Province on August 26 during training.

Accident scene

The plane damaged the street divider on Highway 1A before crashing into the rice field at 8.45am. Huynh Tan Viet, party secretary of Phu yen Province, quickly directed the police and border guards to carry out rescue mission.

Nguyen Duc Quy, deputy head of Nha Trang Air Force Academy, said initial investigation showed that there was a fault with the plane's engine. There was only one pilot controlling the plane who died after the crash and one passer-by was injured.

The pilot, Pham Duc Trung, 22, was still a trainee but he had flown solo many times and was top of the class. He was supposed to graduate this October.

Pilot killed after the crash

Tran Huu The, Phu Yen's vice chairman, said Trung had shown bravery but choosing not to eject and directing the plane to avoid high-voltage electricity lines along the highway to limit the damage to travellers and infrastructure.

This is the third military plane accident this year. In June, Vietnam Coastguard patrol plane Casa C-212 went missing while searching for a Vietnamese Su-30MK2 fighter jet that crashed offshore from the northern-central province of Nghe An.

Last year, four crew were killed when a military helicopter crashed in HCM City on January 28. Technical problems were blamed for the crash.
