South Korean people apologise for war crimes

A South Korean organisation has just sent many objects related to the participation of South Korean soldiers in the Vietnam war to Danang Museum as an apology to Vietnamese people.

On October 11, the South Korea-Vietnam Peace Foundation presented 52 documents and objects to Danang Museum, including 19 photos as part of an Apology to Vietnam by some South Korean people who participated in the Vietnam War. 

Many photos featured painful memories that South Korean soldiers caused for Vietnamese people were also brought to the museum.

Sending these photos to the museum, the South Koreans wanted to express their desire to heal the wounds of war and show their opposition to wars.

Among the objects is the statue Pieta Vietnam which features a Vietnamese woman carrying her dead child. The work by Artist Seo Kyung and Kim Eun Sung aims to console the soul of mothers and children who were killed in massacres caused by South Korean soldiers in Vietnam during the American war.

Many people and organisations who have apologised to the Vietnamese people. They have called for donations to deal with war consequences in some Vietnamese localities such as Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai and Quang Nam provinces.

South Korea under the administration of Park Chung-hee, took an active role in the Vietnam War. From 1964 to 1973, South Korea sent more than 300,000 troops to Vietnam.

The South Korean Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force all participated as an ally of the United States. The number of troops from South Korea was much greater than those from Australia and New Zealand, and second only to the US.
