Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has said Vietnam must have a dynamic, smart and sustainable agriculture sector, considering developing this as one of the most difficult tasks before it, but one essential to modernising the national economy.

He made the remark at a ceremony on December 10 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA).

The Government leader said Vietnam is among the five countries most vulnerable to climate change and the rising sea level, whose effects can be strongly felt in the Mekong River Delta, the rice bowl of Vietnam.

Vietnam’s agriculture still relies on human and natural resources as well as the extensive use of fertilisers and pesticides, leading to unstable quality, slow output growth and environmental pollution, PM Phuc said.

He added that the slowdown in agricultural growth and productivity and the widening income gap between farmers and non-farm workers require the sector to push for fundamental changes.

According to the PM, agriculture plays a strategic role in bringing Vietnam out of the middle income trap, helping the country to establish a firm position in regional and global value chains.

Praising the achievements of the VNUA in the past six decades, the prime minister called on the university staff to work harder in the field to understand what farmers need and come up with useful inventions, citing the words of the eminent agricultural scientist Luong Dinh Cua.

The PM posed the question of what should be done so that Vietnam’s agriculture will become a role model instead of lagging behind other countries.

He urged the university to give advice to the government on a number of issues, including land consolidation to increase mechanisation of agriculture, reduce the use of pesticides and encourage organic farming models.

On the occasion of the event, Prime Minister Phuc awarded the Ho Chi Minh Order to the university on behalf of Party and State leaders.
