Authorities in Danang City are considering limiting the number of private vehicles in an effort to ease rising traffic congestion in the city.

Danang is facing risng traffic congestion in the city centre

The city's transport department said that they have just been requested by the people's committee to outline a plan to control and reduce the number of cars and motorbikes in the city centre to curb congestion.

The plan should be submitted to the city's leaders by June.

According to the Danang Traffic Police Department, the city now has a population of over 1.1 million with some 60,000 cars and nearly 800,000 motorbikes.

With the number of cars increasing by nearly 12% and motorbikes nearly 8% annually, congestion only occurs in the city centre, the department said.

At a recent meeting of Danang People's Council, City Chairman Huynh Duc Tho said that traffic jams occurred more often recently, especially in the city centre at rush hours.

Some of the reasons revealed including increasing population, more high-rise buildings and a lack of parking lots.
