One Vietnamese crewmember was shot dead and six others kidnapped in a pirate attack on a Vietnamese vessel off the Philippines waters on Sunday evening according to Vietnamese authorities.

A representative from the International Shipping Joint Stock Company which owns the Giang Hai Vessel told the press that one of the seven kidnapped seamen had been shot dead by the pirates.

A report by the company said that the ship was on its way transporting cement from Indonesia's Biringkassi Port to Iloilo Port in the Philippines when it was attacked by pirates at 10:24pm on February 19.

"After forcing the seven crew-members to their boat, the pirates shot dead sailor Vu Duc H and threw his body to the sea," the report said. "The body was then recovered by other crew members on the ship."

Deputy Minister of Transport, Nguyen Van Cong told Worker Newspaper on Monday morning that they had been informed about the attack by the Aquamarine Gas ship which was operating near the site.

Cong cited a report from crew of the Aquamarine Gas that the armed pirates attacked the Giang Hai Vessel near the Philippines' Sulu Island, destroyed equipment and kidnapped seven people from the 17 crew-members including the captain, two first mates, two engineers and two crew. The vessel, which was transporting cement, was then left drifting on sea.

The Aquamarine Gas was warned by Philippines' Maritime Security Agency not to approach the Giang Hai to avoid being attacked by pirates.

"We've deployed assistance and by now the ship has been accessed and assisted by another freight vessel," Cong said. "We've also asked for further support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Philippines authorities to save the kidnapped seamen."
