>> Vietnamese firms stop ads on Youtube
At the meeting, Tuan asked the US to help in persuading Google and Facebook to open representative offices in Vietnam so that they can co-operate better with the Vietnamese government in running their services.
Replying, the US ambassador responded with Google's concerns on the several internet ‘management rules’ in Vietnam, Tuan claimed that the rules did not limit the activities of international network providers but only limit violating activities.
"We've found dozens of video clips which have violent, pornographic or slanderous content and distorted historical facts on Youtube," Tuan claimed. "There are also thousands of such clips on Google. Google said that they would remove the clips if we raised them but we can’t trace all these clips. We want Google and all advertising companies to be responsible for dealing with the violating clips."
The minister said that Google have only removed over 40 out of about 8,000 clips that the Vietnamese government objects to. And the company has only blocked the clip with Vietnamese viewers while people from other countries can still watch them. "We want those clips to be blocked permanently to all viewers," Tuan said. So I really want Google and Facebook to have representatives in Vietnam so that the problems can be solved better."
The US ambassador said that he knew about the difficulties in ensuring both the right of internet users and the need to have laws.
"I've always encouraged Google and Facebook to increase investment in Vietnam," he confirmed. "And I will encourage them to have representatives here."
"Google has been able to trace and remove sex videos but has yet had enough technical ability to deal with other clips which is said to have violent, pornographic, slanderous content and allegedly distort historical facts," Ted explained. But the company is willing to co-operate with the Vietnamese government to solve the problems."
