Four schoolgirls drown in Gia Lai

Four pupils in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai’s Ia Grai District drowned while playing in a local river.

According to Duong Tuan Anh, deputy head of Ia Grai District’s Police Department, said that the victims were all from Grade 6 of Chu Van An Secondary School.

At around 2:30 pm on March 29, five schoolgirls named Hoang Thi Hoa, Vo Ngoc My, Le Thi Quynh Huong, Le Thi Minh Thu and Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong together came to Se San River to play.

Only Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong stayed on the bank, while the four others went into the river.

When detecting the friends facing the danger, Phuong tried to use branch to save them, but she failed. Then she ran away to a nearby residential area to call for help. However, it’s was too late to save the victims.

Drowning is one of the main causes of child deaths in Vietnam.

Statistics for 2015 from the Ministry of Health revealed that nine children drowned every day in Vietnam.
