Abandoned children face gloomy future
Three siblings in Thanh Hoa Province have to depend on ill grandparents after their father died and mother left them.
After Dung died, his wife couldn't overcome the difficulties and left when her youngest child was one year old.
"We were shocked finding out he had cancer. We struggled to have daily meals, how could we afford the treatment? We were still in shock when he died. Then my daughter-in-law left and remarried and never returns. I actually wondered how my grandchildren were able to grow up so well," Xoa said.
Their neighbours told Xoa and her husband to give the children away to infertile families but they were unable to part with them. Xoa's husband already lost his hand long ago but still try to find work.
The family lives in a dilapidated house that can't protect them from rain and winds. When the children have fevers, they don't have money to buy them medicine and sometimes their lunches are just instant noodles from their neighbours. Xoa worries for her grandchildren's future when she died.
"Why didn't I die in place of my son?" she said.
