Dan Tri opens new bridge for disadvantaged people in Dong Thap
A new bridge for people in Lai Vung Town, Dong Thap Province opened on April 20.
The bridge that crosses the Cai Ban River was completed after two months of construction. This is the 7th Dan Tri Bridge in the Mekong Delta and the 12th in Vietnam.
Pham Phuoc Hong, a resident in Lai Vung Town said, "I have gone out just to see the bridge at dawn or evening and feel so happy. I told my children that they can go to school safely now and they are also happy."
Pham Huy Hoan, editor-in-chief of Dan Tri/DTiNews Newspaper said the dilapidated Vanh Dai Bridge posed a danger to travellers. "I hope no children will fall when crossing the new bridge and that the bridge will be more convenient to local people in daily commutes," he said.
He also expressed gratitude to readers of Dan Tri/DTiNews, Vietnam Fund for Study Promotion and the charity construction group, local authorities and the people in Lai Vung Town who contributed to complete the new bridge on time and with good quality.
"I hope the children will welcome the new bridge with their academic achievements," he said.
82-year-old Vo Van Loc, head of the charity construction group said the group was established in 2008 and had helped reduce labour cost for hundreds of bridges. They are proud to be able to contribute to the bridge's construction and people in Lai Vung Town.
At the ceremony, Dan Tri/DTiNews also gave 40 scholarships worth VND26m (USD1,100) in total to disadvantaged pupils at Lai Vung Primary School and Lai Vung Secondary School.
The bridge is 3.5m wide with a limit 5 tonnes. The bridge cost VND500m (USD22,000), including VND118m donated by readers, VND132m from Dan Tri/DTiNews Newspaper and the remainder from the local budget.
