Nearly 1,000 workers at a foreign invested footwear company in Ninh Binh Province have gone on strike to protest against the company's policies.

Nearly 1,000 workers at Antonia Vietnam Company in Ninh Binh Province went on strike on April 26.

According to the workers at Antonia Vietnam Company, the company will give them only two days off on the coming Liberation Day and May Day holiday which falls on this Sunday and the Monday. They said that as the Liberation Day falls on Sunday, they should have one more day off.

Besides asking for a three-day holiday, the workers also requested the company to improve their working conditions by installing more electric fans this summer.

"We often have to work in stuffy and hot rooms with bad smell from leather and glue, and this is badly affecting our health," the workers said in a written statement. "We need more fans. And we also want the company not to ask us to do over-time as often.”

Talking to the media about the incident, chairman of the Labour Union of Ninh Binh Industrial Zone, Phung Minh Chung, said the demands were reasonable and should be respected.

"We’ll soon hold a meeting with local authorities, representatives from the workers and leaders of the company to discuss the workers' demand and solve the issue," Chung said.

The workers had not return to work by late afternoon.

The Taiwanese-owned Antonia Vietnam Footwear Company came into operation in September 2015 in Tam Diep District. It currently employees 1,400 workers.
