Can Tho garment factory causes USD18-million losses

The five-day fire at Taiwanese-invested Kwong Lung - Meko Garment Company in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho at the end of March has officially been blamed on an electric short-circuit.

According to Colonel Tran Ngoc Hanh, Director of Can Tho City’s Police Department, the investigation results of the municipal police were similar to the conclusion of the Ministry of Public Security’s Institute for Forensic Sciences.

  

The fire at Kwong Lung - Meko Garment Company caused a loss of USD18 million


Hanh cited insurance firm’s conclusions saying that the incident has resulted in total loss of VND400 billion (USD18 million).

The fire started at around 9 am on March 26 on the top floor of a five-storey building at Kwong Lung - Meko Garment Company in Tra Noc Industrial Zone. The fire quickly spread over the floor with a 1,800 square-metre fabric store. Hundreds of workers were forced to flee.

Initial losses were estimated at USD6 million but have risen to USD18 million.
