The Hanoi People’s Committee has approved a proposal from FPT Information Systems (FIS) to develop an intelligent transport system (ITS) to improve traffic flows in the city, the Vietnam News Agency reports.

Traffic jams in Hanoi.

The ITS will feature ten components, including a control center, a traffic control system, a system to monitor traffic and collect information, a traffic update system, a safety and security system, an emergency control system, a transport infrastructure management system, and a system for public bus transport management.

FIS, a member of FPT Corporation, plans to implement four components this year, with the first phase to be operational by December.

It will build the traffic monitoring and information collection system (through traffic cameras and GPS devices) from June to November. The traffic update system and the system for transport infrastructure management are scheduled to be put into use on September 2 while the system for public bus transport management is expected to be completed in October.

FPT will be responsible for investing in the systems as well as carrying out necessary maintenance, while Hanoi will pay for FPT’s IT services in the first phase. In the second phase, from 2018-2020, the project will operate under the public-private partnership model.

Hanoi aims to build a “smart city” to resolve problems in traffic, environment, and healthcare. The ITS is to reduce congestion, lessen the impact of heavy traffic on the environment, and prevent accidents.
