GrabBike calls for official action after spate of attacks
More than 100 GrabBike drivers have been attacked by xe om motorbike taxi drivers in Vietnam so far, according to Grab Vietnam Company.
"We want the authorities to support us in dealing with the problems and protect GrabBike drivers," An said.
An also said that they have suspended two GrabBike drivers who involved in a fighting with xe om drivers at the Mien Tay Bus Station in HCM City on June 15.
"We have petitioned HCM City Police to ask for further investigation into the case," An said. "We'll not accept badly behaved drivers ensure fair competition in this work,” she added.
Police in HCM City on June 15 had to fire gunshots to control a fight between the app-based motorbike drivers and their competitors at Mien Tay Bus Station.
Earlier, on May 29, a group of Grab motorbike drivers were threatened by a man who used weapons while they were standing to wait for customers in Kinh Duong Vuong Street in HCM City. The man requested them to move from the area and then attacked one of them, causing the victim injuries.
The Malaysia-based Grab which entered Vietnam since 2014, operate both car and motorbike services in the country.
Many xe om drivers have complained that their work is facing more difficulties from Uber and Grab which are more favoured by customers for their cheaper prices and convenience.
To date, up to 20,000 Vietnamese men and women have registered to work as motorbike taxi drivers for Uber.
Some predict that the new businesses could eventually put xe om out of business.
Police investigated a case in which a GrabBike driver was attacked at Mien Tay Bus Station in HCM City in late May.
