Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship kicks off in Ninh Binh
The 2017 AVC Men’s Club Volleyball Championship officially commenced in the northern province of Ninh Binh on June 28, with the participation of 13 national teams and national champion clubs from countries across Asia.
The ten-day event promises some exciting matches amongst the highly competitive men’s volleyball clubs in the region, which include Canberra Heat (Australia), China Beijing Baic Motor (China), Yan Chai (Hong Kong), Sarmayeh Bank (Iran), Al-Bahri (Iraq), Toyota Gosei Trefuerza (Japan), Altay (Kazakhstan), Maldives, Al-Arabi (Qatar), Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Air Force (Thailand) and the Vietnamese national team.
The teams are competing in a round robin tournament consisting of four groups, with the top two placed teams from each group advancing to the knockout round. Hosts Vietnam have been drawn in Group A, alongside Iraq and Sri Lanka.
The overall champions will represent Asia in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship, to be hosted in Poland, for the first time, from December 11 to 17.
After the opening ceremony, Vietnam and Al-Bahri (Iraq) faced each other in their Group A opener.
At last year’s tournament in Myanmar, Sarmayeh Bank Tehran of Iran were crowned champions after defeating Qatar’s Al-Arabi with a score of 3-1 in the final clash.
