A signal man at a railway station in the southern province of Binh Thuan Province has been fired as he slept on the job, causing two trains on the same line to narrowly avoid a major collision.

At around 1:30 am on July 14, Ngo Viet Trung who worked at Suoi Van railway station in Binh Thuan Province fell asleep while on duty. Trains running in opposite directions were closing in on the station.

Hearing the station’s alarm, Trung suddenly woke up and gave the wrong signal to instruct the train SQN2 to take the track 2. At the same time, another staff member who was standing at the railway barrier guided train SE1 to run onto the track 2.

The driver of SE1 detected the mistake so he stopped the train ahead of train SQN2. Train SE1 was then diverted onto track 3 to continue its journey.

Vietnam Railways said Trung had fallen asleep, had awoken in unexpectedly and provided the wrong signal for the train.

The head of Suoi Van railway station whose name has not yet been disclosed was also dismissed from his position.
