Artefacts have been recovered from the sea in the central province of Quang Ngai from an old shipwreck.

Ceramics and pieces of wood were recently detected nine-metres under water during the dredging of Hao Hung Port in Binh Son District’s Binh Thuan Commune.

After being informed, Quang Ngai Province People’s Committee instructed the site should be protected.

Nguyen Dang Vu, director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said the ship might have sunk a very long time ago. Ships transporting ceramics products used to stop at Quang Ngai to take on fresh water centuries ago. Several old ship wrecks have been found off the coast of the province.

He also added that there is a high likelihood that the wrecked centuries-old ship was a merchant ship which came from the north and stopped by the area to seek shelter from storms before sinking.

In the past, although the Binh Son area was not a bustling port, it was characterised by big, unseasonable storms. As the straits were also on the pottery and silk route, merchant ships would anchor to seek shelter from storms and could sink.

In this same area, locals earlier discovered three other wrecked ships carrying antiques of various types, with most being pottery from the Chinese Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and later dynasties.

A ship dating back to the 14th century was discovered in 2013 off the coast of Binh Son District containing thousands of artefacts.
