Hanoi still targets motorbike ban by 2030

Hanoi authorities have officially approved a plan to ban motorbikes in its inner-city districts from 2030.

Vu Van Vien, director of the municipal Department of Transport, said that the plan would be divided into three stages.

Between 2017 and 2018, Hanoi will focus on managing means of transport by classifying vehicles in districts.

In the 2017-2020 period, the city will carry out measures to manage the number of vehicles as well as their quality along with developing public transport. Solutions to restrict private vehicles in local areas and streets which often face serious traffic jams on the basis of odd and even days would be applied.

Meanwhile, during the 2017-2030 phase, private vehicles will gradually be restricted in some certain areas and certain times. This is the preparation to ban motorbikes in Hanoi’s city-centre areas by 2030.

The city will limit the operation of cars based on the basis of certain areas and certain times. Specific areas for taxi ban at peak hours or all days will be also announced. Taxis from other localities travelling into Hanoi will have to conform to separate regulations.

Hanoi will prioritise the development of public transport which is expected to meet around 35% of the travel demand in the capital’s city-centre areas by 2020 and the rate is hoped to rise to 55% by 2030.

The city will try to raise the land rate used for transport infrastructure’s in its inner-city districts to 20-26% by 2030.
