Three customs officers in HCM City have been arrested after being suspected of being involved in the theft of 213 containers from a local port in mid-2015.

On September 13, police arrested the officer Le Vu Nam for being related to the illegal import of 213 shipping containers at Cat Lai Port. Some days ago, Nguyen Van Lam and Tran Thanh Tung who are both in charge of shipping management at the Cat Lai Port were also detained for the same reason.

The containers were suspected to be likely to have contained contraband.

The General Department of Vietnam Customs said that 213 shipping containers of 56 businesses were registered as a transit shipment at Cat Lai Port in mid-2015. The goods were then said to have been transported by land to Cambodia. But then the containers were slipped out through unofficial exits and disappeared from the port.

Investigators also discovered that all 56 businesses had stopped operations or given incorrect addresses. The goods in the containers have not yet been identified.

According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, several HCM City customs officers did not conform to the management regulations of the shipments, leading to the container disappearance.

Police have continued investigating the case.

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh has requested a full report about the case by December this year.
