On 24 December 2009 in Hanoi, the British Embassy signed a grant contract with the Immigration Department of Vietnam. Following that, the UK will provide around VND 5 billion ($270,000) for the Immigration Department of Vietnam to build a new readmission in Noi Bai.

The British Ambassador to Vietnam, Mr Mark Kent attended the ceremony and signed the contract with Colonel Vu Thanh Binh, Director General of the Immigration Department.

The new readmission centre will facilitate the work of officers involving in returns process such as immigration, customs, and healthcare. It will also provide temporary accommodations for returnees whose provinces of origin are far away from Hanoi and can not travel back immediately.

The project is an element in the package of projects that the UK has been supporting Vietnam so far under the framework of the Returns & Reintegration Fund, with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness of the work of relevant agencies in the areas of immigration control and tackling illegal migration.

“Looking ahead, the British Embassy and the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam are working closely together to implement a comprehensive information campaign in Vietnam to raise the awareness of people of the risks and consequences of illegal migration from Vietnam to countries in Europe, particularly to the UK,” said British Ambassador to Vietnam Mark Kent.
