Orphaned poor girl calls for help
A poor girl in the southern province of Can Tho is taking care of her younger brother after her mother died and her father abandoned them.
Nguyen Thi Minh Thu, 15, in Nhon Ai Commune, Phong Dien District has sent a letter to call for help to Dantri/DTiNews.
In the letter, Thu said that when she was three years old, her father left home without saying a word. In 2007, her mother remarried and had a boy named Nguyen Dinh Duy. But the stepfather then left too. Since then, her mother became the pillar of the family. She worked as a day labourer to earn money for the family.
In July this year, her mother was diagnosed with liver cancer and died just 15 days after the disease was detected. Now, Thu and her younger brother are living in a dilapidated house.
Thu stopped her study at school to earn money so that her younger brother can continue going to school.
Thu currently works for a local cosmetics shop with a modest income of VND2 million (USD90.9) per month. She was recently diagnosed with stomach problems and is afraid that her employer will sack her.
Thu’s aunt Nguyen Thi Luong said that Thu’s house can collapse at any time due to the serious deterioration. It floods when it rains.
Tran Thai Binh, chairman of Nhon Nghia Commune, said that Thu’s family was among the poorest households in the locality. Their condition has been much more difficult after their mother’s death. Local authorities are calling on donors to help build their house.
