Abandoned siblings to drop out of school to care for injured brother
Five siblings in Nghe An Province are in need of financial support after being abandoned by their father, while their mother has mental health problems.
14-year-old Bui Thi My said, "My mother has mental illness and often destroys the furniture. She has got better but we need to take care of her or else she'll wander away."
Their mother has mental problems since she was small. She got better upon growing up and got married. However, after giving birth to the third child, her mental problems returned and worsened. She started wandering around, destroying the furniture and screaming at everyone. Her husband abandoned them after they had the fifth child.
Her oldest son, Bui Huu Duc, dropped out of school to work as a delivery man to Vinh City. Two months ago, he lost control of his vehicle and hit a road boundary marker, suffering a traumatic brain injury and pleural effusion. He is no longer in a critical state but needs long-term treatment.
17-year-old Bui Huu Duc Phap is the second son of five siblings. He has become the family's pillar after his brother's accident.
His sister, who is in ninth grade, is asking him to let her drop out of school to find work.
"We probably all have to drop out. We only hope our brother will recover and we'll see what to do next," Phap said.
Party secretary of Bac Son Village Nguyen Dinh Phuc visited and gave the siblings a few hundred thousand VND donated by the villagers.
"They are in difficult situation. We hope the community will help them overcome the difficulties," he said.
