The People’s Committee of Hanoi launched a campaign on November 22 to respond to the national month on HIV/AIDS prevention and control (November 10-December 10) and the World AIDS Day (December 1).

According to the Hanoi Centre for Preventive Medicine, HIV/AIDS infections have been recorded in all districts and almost all communes and wards of the city, mostly in the districts of Dong Da, Ba Dinh and Hai Ba Trung.

As of the end of 2016, 266 out of 100,000 residents in Hanoi were living with HIV/AIDS. In the first nine months of this year, 982 new cases were detected, including 88 deaths, raising the total infections and deaths to 20,033 and 4,683 respectively. Most of them are at the age of 25-49 and got the disease via blood transfusion and sexual activities.

The Asian Epidemic Model predicted that in 2020, the city will have 27,132 people living with HIV, with increased cases transmitted through sexual activities, which alarms the risk of spreading of the virus to the community.

At the launching ceremony, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Le Hong Son called for stronger efforts by local authorities and community to prevent and control HIV/AIDS and helping victims access support and health care services.

He also stressed the need for more effective communication to raise public awareness in the field.
