More than 2,000 houses along Minh Khai Street in Hai Ba Trung District will be removed for the construction of the Ring Road 2 project in Hanoi.

The 43.6km-long road with an investment of over VND10trn (USD442.85m) will run through one of the most densely-populated locations in Hai Ba Trung District.

The cost to build the three-kilometre section from Vinh Tuy Bridge to Vong intersection alone is VND5trn (USD221m). The investor paid VND1trn in advance for ground clearance work in August 2015. According to the city regulations, the maximum compensation rate is VND83m for a square metre and the lowest is VND36m. Due to some disputes, ground clearance has only been recently completed.

About 2,357 houses and 15 state offices covering 176,581 square metres will be removed for both underground and elevated sections of the road. The new road will be 53.5 to 63.5 metres wide with an elevated section.

Minh Khai Street has been a hot spot for congestion for years, especially near Vinh Tuy Bridge. Mai Dong Bridge will also be expanded for the new road.

The new project is expected to be completed in 2021.
