Vietnam Railways started putting into operation automatic ticket gates at stations in Hanoi, Danang and HCM City from December 16. Many passengers have been left puzzled when they first used this checking way.

The upgrade is meant to provide customers with better and friendlier service, as well as to ensure security at these stations.

At the Hanoi station, there will be six lanes with ten automatic ticket gates to serve passengers, whereas Saigon Station has three lanes with five gates and the station in Da Nang will have two lanes and three gates.

Train passengers can scan their printed or electronic tickets at these automatic ticket gates to enter platforms and board trains. To support passengers using the new technology, train staff will be on duty to provide help, especially to the elderly, the disabled, and pregnant women.

Meanwhile, at other railway stations, such as Lao Cai, Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, Thanh Hoa, Vinh, Dong Hoi, Hue, Nha Trang, and Dieu Tri, passengers now present their tickets before passing through the gate.

The technology is quite new to many people, so there have been issues when scanning the tickets at the gates.

When the signal turns from red into green, it means that tickets are valid and the gate will open for passengers to go through

According to some customers, Saigon Station staff only checks passenger information through their tickets, but do not require them to show their other personal papers. So they are worried that this would be a security loophole.

In some cases, tickets are accepted but the gates do not open, so station stations have to use granted code for the settlement.
