"We're used to working through Tet," a fisherman said when being asked about the most important holiday in Vietnam where many people return home with their families.

Vo The Du from Cat Thanh Commune said, "It's definitely not a joyful holiday by the families for us but we're all determined to go to the fishing spots early. This will be our lucky trip for the year."

According to Du, he and another fisherman Nguyen Huu Thuy have just been given a new steel-clad boat on January 12 so they are eager to try them out on the trip to the Spratly Islands. They are hopeful for a bountiful trip so that the crew will have a prosperous late Tet Holiday.

This time of the year is when the fish flock to the usual fishing spots. Moreover, the fishermen have had many difficulties in previous months because of constant storms. The boats become home and the crew are their closest families during this time.

Tran Van Phuc, vice head of Binh Dinh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said celebrating Tet on the sea would not only help improve fishermen's incomes but it was also to ensure Vietnam's sovereignty over its waters.

"About 800 boats and 6,000 fishermen will stay near the Paracel and Spratly Islands. We've asked related agencies to assist the fishermen in emergency cases," he said.
