Thousands gather to receive Ho Chi Minh City Archbishop home

Thousands of Christians in Ho Chi Minh City lined up outside the HCM City Archbishop Residence at 108 Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street on Thursday evening to receive the coffin of Archbishop Paul Bui Van Doc home.

The funeral ceremony was started at 8.30pm at the HCMC Archbishop Residence.

According to the Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City, a grand funeral will be held at the Notre Dame Cathedral on March 16 and organisations and local Christians can come to pay attribute to the Archbishop Paul Bui Van Doc from 8 am.

The burial service for Archbishop Paul Bui Van Doc will be held on March 17.

Archbishop Paul Bui Van Doc of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City passed away at the age of 74 during a visit to Rome, Italy.

The archbishop was attending mass at the Basilica of Saint Paul outside the Walls in Rome on March 7 when he suffered a stroke, according to an announcement from the Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City. He died the same day at a local hospital.

Paul Bui Van Doc was born in 1944 in the Central Highlands City of Da Lat.

He was ordained in 1970 in Da Lat and served at a local seminary until he was appointed as vicar general at the Diocese of Da Lat in 1995.

Archbishop Paul Doc was appointed Bishop of My Tho by Pope John Paul II in March 1999 and was consecrated on May 20 the same year.

He was named Coadjutor Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City on September 28, 2013 by Pope Francis.

On March 22, 2014, he succeeded Cardinal Jean-Baptiste Pham Minh Man as the Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City upon the latter's resignation due to advanced age.

Archbishop Paul Doc was loved for his special care for poor people. His latest activity for the poor was held last November when he organised a large party and gave gifts to 600 low-income people in the city.
