Children face uncertain future as father struggles with illness
A woman in Gia Lai Province is calling for help to save her husband who is suffering from an aortic aneurysm.
In late March, Phuong started feeling tired, dizzy and headache. Doctors said he had high blood pressure and gave him some medicines. One day, after standing up, his muscles stiffened, his chest restricted and he suddenly fainted.
He was admitted to Hoang Anh Gia Lai-University Medical Centre and transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in HCM City as his condition worsened.
Dr Pham Bao Loc said, "When he was admitted on April 8, Phuong had severe chest pain. The tests show that he has chest and abdominal aortic aneurysm because he has severe high blood pressure and wasn't treated correctly for a long time."
According to Loc, if Phuong is not treated, he may suffer from organ failure and die from ruptured arteries. The doctors will use an endovascular stent graft to reinforce the wall of the aorta and to help keep the damaged area from rupturing. The operation is estimated to cost VND400m (USD17,500) and Phuong doesn't have health insurance.
Phuong's wife put up the house as collateral for a VND100m (USD4,400) loan and borrowed another VND200m from the black market. Even though it will be difficult to pay VND1m of interest rate a day, she said there was no way she could let him die.
"We may lose the house but we only hope that he will survive so that my children won't be orphaned," she said.
