The Civil Aviation Administration has temporarily suspended the Vietnam Airlines pilots' license after the crew made a mistake and landed on an unopened runway in late April.

Both the American pilot and Vietnamese co-pilot are suspended indefinitely.

Vietnam Airlines said they had also suspended the pilot and co-pilot for two months and will have suitable punishments for the pilots and others involved after reviewing the investigation results from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV).

Since the aircraft was bought from France, the BEA French accident investigation bureau will also participate in the investigation in accordance with the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation.

According to the CAAV, the flight crew made the mistake. About 15 minutes before landing, the autopilot was turned off for a manual landing. Because the plane was opposite of the sun, the pilot's vision was affected. Moreover, the painted lines on the regular runway have faded while the lines on the unopened runway are fresh and clear. As the result, the pilot changed to the unopened runway, thinking that it is the official runway.

The air traffic controllers are also blamed for not issuing a warning and providing support to the crew in time. The controllers were suspended for investigation.

An engine of the plane was damaged after sucking in stones and metal pieces. The left wing was also slightly damaged and other parts of the plane such as turbines are still being checked.

On April 29, flight VN7344 from HCM City landed on a newly-built Cam Ranh Airport runway that hadn’t been cleared for operation yet. The crew and 203 passengers ended the flight in safety and were provided full services at the airport.

The Airbus A321 was transferred to Vietnam Airlines on August 26, 2015, and had received its most recent maintenance check on March 9, 2018. The flight had a US captain who has worked for Vietnam Airlines since January.
