A Russian traveller has denounced a tourist site in the Central Highlands city of Da Lat for mistreating animals on the TripAdvisor website.

Prenn tourist site is located on the outskirts of Da Lat City and attracts quite many visitors, including foreigners.

According to the Russian traveller, monkeys, bears and porcupines appeared hungry and were beaten as they tried to beg for food from visitors. “The sight of the blood from porcupines will haunt me for a long time”, she said.

“This is a terrible place and the cruellest place is the zoo”, she wrote.

Meanwhile, the monkey was tied by one-metre chain around the neck and the bear was blind. She called on people to request the tourist site to stop the animal cruelty and improve their living condition.

Nguyen Thi Nguyen, director of Lam Dong Province’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that she had been informed of the problem. Local authorities would investigate the case.

Nguyen Tho Phong, deputy head of Prenn, said that the site has co-operated with some partners to bring many kinds of wild animals there to take care of, which has been approved by management agencies. He claimed that the animals were carefully looked after and not mistreated as claimed by the foreign visitor.

Phan Dac Vinh Khue, head of the zoo in Prenn, said that the porcupine looked bad as it was moulting and the bear was already blind in one eye before it arrived on the site.
