Phu Yen Provincial People's Committee has decided to allocate over VND18.355 billion to support local lobster farmers who suffered losses following mass lobster deaths last year.

The money will be sourced from the government's aid for the southern coastal province to cope with natural disasters in 2017.

According to the committee, farmers who suffered losses from 70 percent will receive support of VND3 million per/100 m3 of lobster cage and those incurring losses of between 30-70 per cent get VND 2 million per 100 m3 of cage.

Last year, lobsters died en mass in Song Cau Town in Phu Yen Province, causing big losses for 693 farmers in the area. A report from local authorities showed that over one and half million lobsters died between May 24 - 26 and June 1 - 6. The total losses from the incident ran into an estimated hundreds of billions of dong.

An investigation by the provincial department of agriculture and rural development said that the lobster deaths were caused by a sudden change in the weather and the water pollution caused by overly-dense farms.

Phu Yen Provincial People's Committee is going to issue regulations on seafood husbandry management at local farms in addition to providing financial support.
