The sixth Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and related meetings will take place in the central city of Da Nang from June 23-29, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

The event is expected to attract the participation of nearly 1,500 delegates, including the ministers in charge of environment and senior officials from 183 member countries, non-governmental organizations on environment, representatives of development partners in Viet Nam and international financial institutions.

The organization of the 6th GEF Assembly manifests Viet Nam’s dynamic and active role in the GEF, making contributions to enhancing cooperation with multi-lateral and bilateral partners, seeking for opportunities to receive financial and technical supports.

It also helps strengthen capacity on protecting natural resources and environment, including the implementation of the Paris Agreement at the Paris climate conference (COP21) in December 2015 and sustainable development goals of the United Nations.

Viet Nam joined the GEF on December 5, 1994, with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment serving as the national coordinator.

Since its establishment, GEF Viet Nam has raised US$457.18 million for 107 environment projects in different sectors and localities. Of them, 56 are national-level projects worth US$153.8 million and 47 are regional and global projects worth a total of US$294 million. Additionally, there are 4 projects funded by the Special Climate Change Fund with a total value of roughly US$9 million.

During the GEF 6, Viet Nam was allocated over US$26 million for projects in the fields of climate change (over US$11 million), land degradation (over US$1.5 million) and biodiversity (over US$13 million). As of late 2016, the GEF Viet Nam Office gave nod to 15 projects worth US$24.6 million in the System for Transparent Allocation of Resources (STAR) of which the GEF consented to 6 projects valued at over US$18.8 million.
