The Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway was opened to traffic on September 2 after five years of construction, which is expected to reduce travel time and boost economic development among key hubs in the central region.

The 139 km four-lane expressway, which connects Danang City and Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces, has 131 km of high-speed road and nearly 8km road linking with National Highway 1A.

The first 65km-long section, linking Danang City and Quang Nam Province, was inaugurated in August 2017.

The expressway allows speed limits of up to 120km per hour, helping reduce travel time from Da Nang to Quang Ngai to one and a half hours, instead of the usual three hours when using National Road 1A.

The project costs nearly VND35 trillion (USD1.63 billion), including nearly VND16 trillion (USD799 million) loaned by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and over VND12 trillion (USD590) by the World Bank (WB). The rest was covered by the Vietnamese government.

Speaking at the road launching ceremony on September 2, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung highly appreciated the fund by the JICA and the WB, the efforts by experts and construction workers, and the support from local people for the project.

"The Ministry of Transport should work with the investor to soon complete support facilities along the route," the minister said, adding that the investor, Vietnam Expressway Corporation, should strictly follow state regulations in management, exploitation and maintenance of the expressway to ensure smooth and effective operation of the road.

The expressway is expected to not only create opportunities for central localities to attract investment, and promote the development of industrial parks and tourism along the central coast, but also boost transport connectivity from the Cambodia, Laos Vietnam Economic Triangle through the East-West Economic Corridor to seaports in the central region.

Tolls for cars and trucks running on the route will be between VND200,000-790,000 (USD8.80-34.80).
