Buildings in Hanoi were mildly affected by the earthquake in China, said Tran Chung, former head of the State Authority for Construction Quality Inspection under the Ministry of Construction.

Many Hanoians feel the shaking when a 5.3 Richter scale earthquake occurs in Yunnan, China on September 8

According to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Geophysics, a 5.3 Richter scale earthquake occurred in Yunnan, China on September 8, and was about 118km away from Muong Te District, Lai Chau Province.

Some parts of Hanoi were affected by the aftershock and people in high-rise buildings were able to feel the shaking, albeit for a short time. Many people were confused and became concerned about the building quality in the capital.

Chung said the citizens didn't have to worry too much. Since Vietnam is not located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, most earthquakes will be mild. Most modern buildings in Hanoi have also been built with earthquakes and strong storms in mind. Only constructions in areas that experience Richter scale 9 earthquakes that should be closely inspected.

The Construction Law stipulated that buildings must be inspected if they have an earthquake and storm-resistant structure.

"Modern building design is fine and monitored. We also have regulations about earthquake resistant structures so the citizens can rest assured and stay calm," Chung said.
