Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has signed an official document to start a VND2.5trn (USD107m) project that will link Sapa with the Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway.

A road to Sapa

The BOT project includes repairing and upgrading the National Highway 4D and expanding provincial road 155 to link Sapa with Lao Cai City. The fund will come from the state budget, locality budget, investor capital and credit loans.

The extended provincial road will be 25km long. The sections running through the mountainous area will have two lanes while the section through Sapa will have four lanes. The National Highway 4D is over 29km long connecting Sapa and Lao Cai City. However, the highway is narrow and has many bends.

From 2018 to 2020, the authorities will clear the ground and the project and start expanding the provincial road 155. The project is expected to be completed afterwards. Vehicles on Lao Cai-Sapa route will use the National Highway 4D while those who go in Sapa-Lao Cai direction will use the provincial road 155.

Noi Bai-Lao Cai Highway was opened to traffic in 2015 and connected with Hekou-Kunming Highway to boost Vietnam's aqua-products and agriculture exports. It is part of the Asian Highway 14 (AH14), a road in the Asian Highway Network running from Hai Phong, Vietnam to Mandalay, Myanmar and connecting to Kunming, Yunnan, China.
