Hand, foot, mouth disease ravages Quang Ngai

The central province of Quang Ngai is facing the outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease with a sharp rise in the number of patients.

According to the provincial Centre of Preventive Medicine, to date, the province has recorded more than 1,000 hand, foot and mouth disease cases, nearly two times higher than the same period of last year. Quang Ngai City alone has 405 patients who are mostly found at schools.

On October 2, the disease infection was also detected at Nghia Phu Nursery School in Quang Ngai City. After that, more than 50 children of the school have been allowed to stay at home for the health condition supervision.

The school teachers have been instructed to sterilise their classrooms with Chloramines B.

Director of the centre Le Thi Bich Thu despite efforts for the disease prevention and control, particularly at all local schools, the epidemic has still spread its wings. This is the highest number of hand, foot and mouth patients of the province over the past three years.

The Ministry of Health has asked local authorities and hospitals nationwide to strengthen preventive measures to control the spread of hand, foot, mouth disease.

In the first nine months of this year, over 53,500 infections were reported nationwide, and nearly 25,900 victims were hospitalised, six of whom died in five cities and provinces in the south.

In Vietnam, the disease occurs throughout the year, but the peak season is from March until May and September to December. Children can get hand, foot and mouth disease at all ages but children below three years old are more susceptible.
