Street food in HCM City

Street food stalls are favoured because of easy access and cheap prices. However, there are huge food safety risks as the ingredients aren’t managed. Many of the customers are low-earners so even if they are aware of sub-standard food stalls they hardly have any other choices.

Unhygienic food can cause many digestive issues and chronic diseases. In order to prevent the risks, the Food Safety Management Authority of HCM City has carried out several measures to tighten management and develop street food along with local tourism.

Pham Khanh Phong Lan, head of the Food Safety Management Authority of HCM City said each district would set up their own food street.

She said, "We've built plans to improve food safety standards in 2018 and 2019 to raise both sellers and customers' awareness. It's impossible to impose restaurants' food safety standards on street stalls but there must be some requirements to ensure public health."

The Food Safety Management Authority has put up 10 criteria and will work with the Vietnam Fatherland Front and Women's Union to hold training courses for the sellers. They are also planning on calling for the private sector to donate equipment such as masks and gloves as well as providing regular health check-ups for the sellers.

The authorities will issue the logos to the street food stalls depend on the 10 criteria. The stalls will be inspected and the unqualified street stalls will be given warnings, publicly shamed or shutdown.

"If public awareness about food safety is raised, we'll organise major food street areas in similar to Singapore and Thailand where local cuisine will be introduced to international tourists and help boost tourism," said Pham Khanh Phong Lan.
