Flight VJ689 with 163 passengers departed from Cam Ranh Airport to Tan Son Nhat Airport in HCM City at 12 pm. However, several minutes later, a technical alarm went off and the captain brought the plane back to Cam Ranh Airport and landed on an unopened runway.

Passengers got out safely and were put on another flight.

According to the ministry, this is a serious incident and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam must launch an investigation to find and publicise the cause of the mistake. The CAAV was previously asked to work with Cam Ranh Airport to pull the plane to the parking lot and repair the runway if necessary.

Vietjet Air and Airports Corporation of Vietnam were asked to work with the CAAV in the investigation and have measures to ensure passenger safety.

The flight crew and involved Vietjet Air employees have been suspended. Vietjet Air was also temporarily banned from rolling out more flights and will be strictly monitored at four major airports including Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat, Danang and Cam Ranh airports while a thorough inspection on its operation processes is carried out.

On December 24, a Vietjet plane from Incheon to HCM City had to land in Taipei after a false alarm. The plane had flown for two hours when the smoke alarm went off. However, after checking that it was a false alarm, the plane continued its journey and landed in HCM City on the following day.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam and local airlines will work with Airbus to prevent further false smoke alarms. This is the second time a Vietjet plane had an emergency landing due to a false alarm this year.
