It is the project under the framework of a South Korea-Vietnam co-operation project to mitigate the losses caused by war-era bombs and mines. The project was launched in March 2018 with aims to completely remove the remaining unexploded ordnance (UXO) underground, ensure the safety of the people when going to public areas like hospitals and schools. It also aims to boost the socio-economic development of the areas.

The local authorities have planned to survey and demining bombs and mines at 10,000 hectares in Quang Binh and Binh Dinh provinces. This is also the support from the KOICA and the United Nations Development Programme to the National Mine Action Programme for the 2010-2025 period of Vietnam.

Over 224,000 hectares in Quang Binh Province, or 30% of its total area, are contaminated by the UXO.

At the ceremony, Caitlin Wiesen, the representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Vietnam, said they were very happy to be able to work with Vietnamese authorities to clean up the remaining explosives after wars.

Besides the equipment, the project will also help improve the management ability of local authorities and raise public awareness about the issue to prevent tragic accidents.

230 officials from the Ministry of Defence will be trained on UXO survey and detection.
