The local authorities in Thua Thien-Hue Province are restoring the cultural house named after the late president Le Duc Anh following his death on April 22.

The National Commission on Health Services for Senior Officials announced that former Vietnamese State President Le Duc Anh passed away at the age of 99 at 8.10 pm on April 22.

On the same day, at his hometown in Thua Thien-Hue Province, the restoration of the General Le Duc Anh Library-Cultural House in Nam Village, Loc An Commune, was also started as part of efforts to pay respect to the late president. The library-cultural house was built in 2012, covering 4,000 square metres. It was divided into several areas including a memorial area, library and a garden where many photos, documents and items related to Le Duc Anh are on display.

However, the construction has deteriorated and in need of repair. The house will be given new paint and the garden will be cleaned up before it is opened for visitors.

Le Duc Anh's nephew, Le Trung Thanh, said, "The restoration was started after my uncle passed away. The garden has been trimmed and we are cleaning up the displayed items."

Located next to the cultural house is the late president's clan ancestor house. Most of the items will be temporarily kept at the clan ancestor house during the restoration.

Le Duc Anh was born in 1920 in Phu Loc District, Thua Thien-Hue Province. He was the Politburo member, Party Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, Minister of Defence, State President of Vietnam, and advisor to the Party Central Committee.

He was promoted to general in 1984 and became the president of Vietnam in 1992. He participated in the resistance wars against France and the United States for 30 years and had 10 years of experience in the fighting against the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia.
