Police in HCM City have busted the largest yet transnational drug trafficking ring of four people, seizing 500kg of Ketamine.

Liu Ming Yang (second from right) is arrested when police busted a largest-yet transnational drug trafficking ring in Ho Chi Minh City on May 11

The four, who were arrested on May 11, are Liu Ming Yang, 34, Jhu Minh Jyun, 32, Jhu's girlfriend Nguyen Thi Thu Van, 35, from Taiwan, and Jhu's interpreter Su Jia Mei, 33, from China.

According to the police's report released at a press meeting on May 12, Liu is the head of the ring that transported drugs from Myanmar to Vietnam.

Following Liu's direction, Jhu arrived in Vietnam on March 14 to hire a warehouse in Binh Tan District to keep 500kg of Ketamine, hid in four packaging machines. When hearing about some recent police raids on drug trafficking rings, they planned to move the Ketamine which is valued at nearly VND500 billion (USD21.74 million) to another warehouse in Binh Chanh District. Van and Su assisted Jhu in hiring the warehouse. Jhu was arrested while using a car to transport the drugs to the new warehouse.

Speaking at the meeting, Pham Van Cac, head of the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, the group intended to ship the drugs from Vietnam to other countries for consumption.

"This is the biggest trans-national drug trafficking ring we have busted so far with co-operation from the HCMC Customs Department," Cac said. "We started investigated into the ring in August last year and had encountered many difficulties as they regularly changed places to hide the drug."

The case is under further investigation.
