HCM City has announced a hotline for bus passengers to report sexual harassment and pickpockets, said Tran Chi Trung, the municipal Department of Transport’s director of the Public Transport Management Centre.

Passengers can ring the police through the hotline available at 098 186 0202.

Passengers’ information will be sent to the criminal police in the nearest area to timely deal with the violations. In May this year, the HCM City Department of Transport’s director of the Public Transport Management Centre and the police jointly caught red-handed five pickpockets on bus.

According to Trung, pickpockets found to have stolen less than VND2 million (USD86.95) are often requested to pay administrative fines.

Under the centre’s instruction, local buses need to have a diary. In case, passengers report that they are pickpocketed. Drivers have to write down the details of the passenger including name, phone number and time when the incident occurred. This will be among foundations for the police’s investigations.

Trung noted that the number of bus passengers who called the centre to report sexual harassment was very small.

“People should immediately report sexual harassment on buses to the centre so that we can adopt measures to tackle the issue,” Trung emphasised, saying that the centre would check cameras on during their investigation.
