The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) officially launched a permanent blood donation site at Hoan Kiem Medical Centre, No. 26 Luong Ngoc Quyen Street, Hang Buom ward, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi on June 22.

This is the first permanent blood donation site apart from hospitals which will operate regularly everyday of the week.

Dr. Bach Quoc Khanh, Director of the NIHBT said that blood donation activities have seen great progress over the past years but blood collection is mainly carried out at mobile blood donation sites, resulting in irregular reception of blood and blood shortages during many times throughout the year.

He noted that Hanoi received over 223,000 units of blood donation in 2018 which was not enough to meet the requirements of emergency and treatment as Hanoi is home to many central hospitals with huge demand for blood.

Khanh noted that the permanent blood donation site will create favourable conditions for people to donate blood regularly, contributing to forming the habit of donating blood and developing blood donation activities in a sustainable manner.

More permanent blood donation sites are scheduled to be opened in other districts in Hanoi in the near future.

*On the same day, Quang Ninh province launched the 2019 Hanh trinh do (Red Journey) campaign which attracted more than 1,000 local people to donate 626 units of blood.

*Kon Tum province also launched the blood donation campaign on June 21-22 which was estimated to collect 800 units of blood.
