The Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam has called on local Buddhists to actively join blood and organ donation campaigns.

Monk Thich Thanh Quyet, head of the Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam calls on local Buddhists to join blood donation campaigns

Monk Thich Thanh Quyet, head of the Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam, said they had co-operated with the National Institute Of Hematology and Blood Transfusion to hold a blood and organs donation day on August 4. The project was a response to the prime minister's call for collaboration between the Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam and Vietnam Red Cross for humanitarian activities.

According to Monk Thich Thanh Quyet, the donation was also a desire of 500 monks and Buddhists. He said the Buddha gave away the eyes, limbs and flesh for other people. "If we can't give away a part of ourselves to save others, we can't reach nirvana," he said.

Monk Thich Thanh Quyet said he wanted to donate blood and would register for organ donation later.

The Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam hopes to make the donation into an annual event. The sangha has called on both monks and Buddhists across Vietnam to join the blood and organs donation. In May, nearly 600 monks and Buddhists registered to donate their organs and tissue at Giac Ngo Pagoda.

The Buddhism Today Foundation-Giac Ngo Pagoda has organised the organs donation four times in the past.
