Hanoi strives to raise public transport coverage

Hanoi will implement a range of measures to raise the public transport coverage to ambitiously cater for up to 20-25% of city travel demand by 2020.

Under a plan issued on Monday by the city People’s Committee Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung, vehicles entering some areas that are often face traffic congestion will be subject to a congestion charge.

The city has boosted the construction pace of Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro project for being put into operation by late this year. Meanwhile, part of Nhon-Hanoi Station metro line is slated for being completed by April 2021 and the entire route will become fully operational by December 2022.

Hanoi will also open more buses to connect Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro route and BRT routes. More bike and motorbike parking areas will be set up near stations to serve people who want to take means of public transport.

The city will also consider running smaller buses for routes with narrow streets. On some major streets, prioritised bus lanes will be introduced.

The city will continue expanding the bus network to suburban areas. 21 new bus routes to the outskirts of the city are expected to be open by the end of this year. An additional 25-30 new routes will be introduced in 2020.

Hanoi will mull over how to manage app-based taxis.
