The local authorities of Dong Bang Village came to Hanoi Heart Hospital to call for help to the family of Tran Thi Hanh. When being diagnosed with thyroid cancer Hanh refused treatment due to a lack of money. Her husband became their pillar. He worked as a bricklayer for VND100,000 (USD4.3) a day. But the situation got worse after her husband fainted and was admitted because of a heart attack.

Hanh often skips lunch, sometimes even the breakfast and asks for charity dinners to save some money.

Dr Dao Xuan Dung said if Hanh's husband is not treated in time, he might die. He doesn't have health insurance so the operation will cost VND150m (USD6,400) but the family cannot afford the surgery.

After their story was published, the readers have donated VND130m to Hanh's family so that her husband could be saved. Of which VND30m was donated by Nguyen Thi Hong Ha, a resident on Bach Mai Street. On September 12, the representative of Dantri transferred the money to Hanh. Hanh's husband was able to be operated which is a success. He may be released soon and doesn't require another operation.

"It's like everyone has brought us back from the dead. My husband was saved," she said.

More great news arrived when Tran Van Thuan, director of Vietnam National Cancer Hospital, said that they would treat Hanh's thyroid cancer for free and asked her to come to the hospital as soon as possible. "We'll give her all financial support to help her family overcome this difficult time," he said.

Hanh said, "Everyone helped my husband and then me. We'll never forget this kindness."
