European language festival set for Hanoi
Council of Europe: The 9th European Day of Languages to be held on the afternoon of October 19.
Initiated by the Council of Europe, the European Day of Languages festival is now organized by the European Union National Institutes of Culture (EUNIC) every year and is where anyone, young or old, can learn something about the variety of European languages and culture.
This year’s event, from 1 to 5pm on October 19 at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi, will be organized by the embassies of Finland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Poland, France and the Czech Republic, Wallonie-Bruxelles in Vietnam, the British Council, and the Goethe-Institut in Vietnam. It hopes to attract students, parents and anyone interested in languages and culture. Entry is free.
Fun, short language classes of 30 minutes will be offered in English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Czech, and Spanish, where participants can learn some basic vocabulary and communication strategies.
A game called “Speak-dating” is also being held, which allows people to come into contact with each other in different languages in five minutes of fun learning. Attractive prizes for the winners of the quiz include scholarships for language courses, t-shirts, hats, and books.
The 9th European Day of Languages - “A Festival of Languages” - is a unique opportunity for all in Hanoi interested in European languages, culture, international exchange, or overseas study.
Diplomatic relations between the EU and Vietnam were officially established on November 28, 1990. European culture has since been widely introduced in Vietnam through cultural centers such as the Goethe-Institut, L’Espace (French Cultural Center), British Council, and Italian House, etc.
The scope of bilateral cooperation also extends across fields such as political issues, global challenges, economics, trade and investment, and development. The EU has contributed positively to Vietnam’s socioeconomic development and international economic integration.
Some European countries have also established cultural and artistic support funds to promote cultural exchange and the development of contemporary art in Vietnam. Wherever possible, European countries give priority to cultural development, considering it an effective form of promoting the EU’s profile.
Many cultural activities are held annually in Vietnam by European countries, such as the European Music Festival, the European Film Festival, the European Documentary Film Festival, European Literature Day, and East meets West: International Dance Festival, among others.
Through such cultural activities, Vietnamese artists have the opportunity to exchange and learn from European artists and local people can enjoy diverse cultures and modern trends from Europe.
