First organized in 1981 in Canada, the Terry Fox Run is now held annually in more than 30 countries and territories with millions of participants joining in to raise money for cancer research.

The Terry Fox Run Vietnam has become one of the largest international Terry Fox Runs in the world and attracts tens of thousands of runners, with a record 23,500 taking part in 2018, raising more than VND2.9 billion ($125,000) for cancer research in Vietnam.

“We are very proud to announce that the Terry Fox Foundation has authorized CanCham Vietnam to disburse $500,000 raised through the annual Terry Fox Run Vietnam for a Pediatric Hematology Oncology (PHO) Research Program in Vietnam,” said Mr. Bao Nguyen, President of CanCham Vietnam and Co-Chair of the Terry Fox Run Vietnam.

“The program aims to build a national workforce to improve effective research, diagnosis, and outcomes for children with cancer in Vietnam and will be done in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the Center for Health Sciences UT in San Antonio, the UCSF Children’s Hospital Benioff in San Francisco and Oakland, the Children’s Medical Academy Khoo Teck Puat National University in Singapore, the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Singapore, and the Curie Research Institute in Paris.”

The Terry Fox Run is a non-competitive, non-commercial event that accepts no sponsorship, branding, or marketing, instead bringing together volunteer organizers and thousands of participants to celebrate Terry’s bravery and vision of finding a cure for cancer.

“We hope to receive support from all Vietnamese people to improve the outcome of children’s cancer,” Mr. Bao added. “Phase 1 of the Research Program started in August 2019 and will last until August 2022.”

The press conference announcing the run welcomed singer Doan Trang and blogger Tam Bui as ambassadors for the 23rd annual Terry Fox Run Vietnam and announced the official 2019 Terry Fox Run Vietnam t-shirt. This year’s rainbow-colored t-shirt design reflects the spirit of the “Marathon of Hope” over the years, highlighting the diversity and amazing impact of the Terry Fox Run around the world.
