People in the southern central province of Binh Dinh are actively preparing for the approaching Storm Nakri which has been forecasted to directly hit the central region of Vietnam.

Storm Matmo recently damaged many houses in Nhon Hai Commune in Quy Nhon City. Local people are making better preparations for Storm Nakri in response. They have carried rocks to consolidate a dyke section harmed by Storm Matmo.

Nguyen Van Dong, 56, from Hai Nam Village said that he used sandbags to protect his house from the typhoon.

According to Nguyen Thi Minh, party secretary of Nhon Hai Commune, around 250 households are living near the dyke and 140 among those to be excavated today.

Local authorities have called on people to take preventive measures. Some 1,300 coastal households will be urgently moved to safer places.

Chairman of the provincial people’s committee Ho Quoc Dung has instructed localities to prioritise typhoon response activities. Localities have to arrange people to be on duty around the clock for supporting people during the storm.

Food and shelter for boats and ships need to be ensured, Dung urged.

By 4 pm on November 10, the eye of the typhoon would be 290 kilometres from the coast of Quang Ngai and Khanh Hoa provinces.

During the following 24-48 hours, the storm would move the west north-west direction and then make landfall in the central region.

Heavy rains have been predicted from Thua Thien-Hue to Ninh Thuan provinces and the Central Highlands region from tonight (November 9) to November 12.

The centre has also warned floods and erosion for many central localities.
