Nguyen Trung Kien, chairman of Phu Cat District People's Committee said a group of 12 pupils who were all in 8th grade at Cat Thanh Secondary School went to the beach for a swim. However, two pupils died from drowning and one is still missing.

"We have visited the families on November 18. Families of the deceased were provided VND5m (USD216) each, with the other families given VND2m each. We have directed related agencies to search for the missing pupil," he said.

At 2.30 pm on November 17, the group of pupils went for a swim. Suddenly, four pupils encountered strong currents and were swept away. After hearing the screams, a local man, Ngo Cong Khanh, quickly ran out and managed to take two pupils ashore. Unfortunately, one pupil died. The other was brought to Binh Dinh General Hospital and has recovered.

The body of the third pupil was swept onto the beach on the next day and found by locals. The remaining pupil is still missing.

The police and border guards have been sent to search for the pupil.
