Khuoi Khi Village children huddle in the cold

Teachers at a kindergarten in Bac Kan Province are calling for financial support to build better facilities for children.


Khuoi Khi Nursery School Site

When the temperature in the northern mountainous areas dropped to just over 10 degrees, dozens of children at Khuoi Khi school site had to sit tight together to fight the cold as their classrooms have severely deteriorated.

Colonel Duong Van Tinh, director of Bac Kan Department of Public Security, said there were many difficult cases in Bac Kan, especially in Pac Nam District where Dao, Tay, H'Mong and Santri ethnic groups live. It takes two hours travelling through the mountain to reach Pac Nam. At some points, the travellers will have to switch from cars to the motorbike because of the road conditions.

 


Dilapidated kitchen

The school site consists of a dilapidated kitchen, a toilet and a classroom. The classroom is in much better condition. According to the police, the room was built in a project funded by a foreign organisation a long time ago. After the project was completed, the room was abandoned so the local authorities used it as a classroom.


The children's garden

However, the classroom is only large enough for 20 children and teachers. The rest of the children have to stay in another dilapidated room. All of the villagers in Khuoi Khi are from Dao ethnic group. The children's supported lunch only costs VND12,000. The parents then pay VND1,000 per child to the cook to improve the meals a little.

Party Secretary of Khuoi Khi Village Ban Chan Pyao said, "We only hope that the children will have a proper classroom where they will be protected from the wind and rain. It's really cold inside the classroom during winter."
